As you all know…I’ve moving from my sewing/crafting area in the basement to my very own room. It shouldn’t be much longer before I can start working in there. Which is good…because this is the time of year that I start working on all the goodies for my shows that I do in the Fall. While working on my new room…it got me thinking about all the years that I’ve been sewing & crafting and I realized that I’ve been doing this for 25 years. (Exactly half of my life!)
Then I got thinking about what I started out crafting all those years ago and how things have changed over the years…or did it really change that much. Join me in my walk down memory lane and you’ll see what I mean.
Let’s start with “Game Boards”…I loved them then and I love them now. The look of the game boards I design have changed, but they are just as popular today as they were back in 1985.
These are from back in the day…1985. When bunnies, geese, hearts, and amish girls & boys were very popular in country decor.

But I must say that I love the country look of today’s game boards much better.

As we continue our walk down memory lane, we come to another good seller for me that I made when I first started doing shows back in the 80′s…stenciled “Pantry Bags”.
These were great to sit on shelfs or tuck into baskets.

I haven’t made stenciled bags in years, but the little machine embroidered “Pillow Tucks” that I make now are just as popular…great to sit anywhere or tuck into baskets and old sewing drawers.
These little pillows are among my favorite things that I have been making lately. (Thank you to all the ladies that have been purchasing them.)

Speaking of Annie’s… Let’s stop and visit her. Here is a picture of the “Country Dolls” that I was making in 1989.
I had several customers that collected these dolls. My mom still has the one that is in the upper left-hand corner. Again I must say that I love the “Raggedy Annie Dolls” that are popular now much better.
I made these two last year and sold them on eBay.

Another stop along memory lane that we must visit is “Samplers”. My style of samplers that I make now are very different from what I made in the 80′s.
”Wood Samplers” from 1987.

My “Machine Embroidered Samplers” that I do now have taken the place of the wood ones…and I just love making machine embroidery samplers. Love them on sheep, love them framed, and love them on pillows!!

This one was made for me by a very special friend…but I’m making some framed samplers for my upcoming show season.
I do have a sheep listed on my selling blog …you can get to there through my side-bar under “my selling blog”.
Our last stop down memory lane is to “My Painted Items”. I love to paint but have gotten away from it some over the years. Well, that isn’t totally correct…Somewhere in the middle of these 25 years, I did alot of painting on “Country Seasonal Jewelry” and but stopped painting the bigger pieces until again here recently. When looking back at photos…I find that I still love the pieces that I painted 20 to 25 years ago just as much as I love the newer pieces that I done recently.
I painted both of these pieces in the early 90′s…and I think that this next one would still sell well today in 2009. All it would need is a piece of homespun to hang by instead of ribbon. Might just have to paint another.
And of course…I love these new designs.
I’ve started painting another raggedy doll on a small rolling pin that is already sold. I’ll share a picture of it when it is finished. I’ve been picking up rolling pins whenever I find them…so that I will have some to offer at my shows.

Hope you enjoyed walking with me down memory lane today. Did you realize what I did…that I still love creating the same kind of items and they are still popular 25 years later.
Yes..colors have changed from soft blues, pink and peach tones to more prim colors of red, black, mustard, blue, and neutrals. We have changed the hearts for stars. (Well, I still have a few hearts, but I really do love the stars!) We have gone from geese to our favorite black bird..the crow and other primitive birds out of calico prints with a time-worn look. We still love our barnyard friends, but they are more simple and not so cutesy. It seems to me that the style today is less fussy and tends to be more inspired by our colonial past. But no matter how many years go by…the one thing that remains the same is that we all still love to decorated our homes in the “Country Style”!!
Until next time…. blessings, Cindy

Wow! I loved the geese, amish and duck themes back in the 80s. I was a youngin doing lots of that plastic canvas stuff -too funny! I love the sheep cutout with the gameboard on it. It is really nice. Your work is great! What great memories! Kim

Your painting jobs are great!! I especially like that sampler. I love that checkerboard with the crows… yep that is my favorite. I ordered some new stencils from that site that Char spoke about on her blog (Homestead Stencil Co.) and they were having great sales … 25% off which was great. I saved $12.00 which I thought was wonderful. Where did you find that crow checkerboard stencil? How much would you sell one of those for? Oh – when I get my stencils then maybe you and I could do a gameboard swap? What do ya think? When is your fisrt show? Oh – I also wanted to check with you to see if you have ever been to North Shore Primitives in Washington Courthouse? A fellow blogger of mine posted about the shop and it looks pretty cute from the outside. Just curious if you have been there and if you like it.
Well, have a great day girl. We should be getting a little bit of rain today which is something we could use.

Thanks for that trip down memory lane. You do wonderful work. Love the rolling pin and game boards. I have been the same route you have with the painting and I have to admit the prim look is the one I like best. I have some of my older pieces tucked away somewhere……………..should get ‘em out and maybe prim ‘em up a bit!
Take care and talk to you soon……………Cheryl

Hi Cindy….gameboards, mainly checkerboards, are a favorite thing of mine to decorate with and yes, I much prefer the colonial styles and colors of today over the peaches and blues of country decor past….thank you for the trip down Memory Lane!….I used to live off a street literally named Memory Lane in Southern California, it was the street I turned from to get to Park Lane, the street I lived on for 15 years!

Time goes so fast doesn’t it! I have been crafting now and selling my items for 15 or so years now. Can’t wait to see your completed craft room. Take care!

Enjoyed your trip down memory lane, it is good to keep a record of your work. I love your work and it would be hard to pick a favorite. Enjoy your new work space, sounds like its almost done.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane! Yes, country is still popular today but it has been “updated” from ruffles on lampshades to simpler lines as well as colors for rooms and colors for furniture. I’m with you…I still love some of the “older” country accessories and I do have a few in my house but I am “upgrading” slowly to more prim things. I may get tired of that in a few years and by then things will have changed again so there’s always something fresh and new to try. I love all your crafts. You are truly talented!

Thank you Cindy for the trip down memory lane. Imagine my surprise when I saw a couple of your painted items that I have done too! You and I must have the same taste in pictures to paint. I wish I could find some new books as I’ve lost most of my old ones between all the moving I’ve done the past 12 years.
Take Care,
Debbie

This was a really fun post to read – what a trip down the memory lane. It’s funny that you even posted this because I was looking through a Country Sampler magazine that had some rooms done “before” and “after”. So your post was almost an extension of that article. Funny how things change over the years!

It is amazing what we made years ago and what we make now.
It seems some things never go out of style and old things are new again.
I used to make things for the house, but my friends would talk me into selling them, so I never got to keep anything, lol. I will have to see if I can dig up some old photos of things I used to make.

This reminds me of the article in Country Sampler – then and now – it is something I am posting about when I get around to it later in the week. Amazing how things change huh?!!
Congrats on 25 years of your business!

You sure hit the nail on the head with this post! The more things change – the more they stay the same. I LOVE your rolling pin! I’m not even into Annie’s, but that is adorable. Did you ever think of doing crows on one??? Let me know if you do and I might be able to order it.
I’m hoping business picks up a little as the week goes on, Tuesdays are always bad for some reason. I’m going to take material to work with me and cut out more dolls while I’m there and maybe paint a few more signs. At least it gives me something to do!
Yes, this GM thing is something else. I just hate seeing all these plants close, and then it trickles down to all the small companies. I’ve never seen Michigan in such bad shape. There are empty houses in every town!
Have a great day and we’ll talk again soon, Dawn

I loved this post! How neat that you still love the same things but the styles have changed just a tad.
I loved and admired country decor as a child, I just didn’t know what it was called and wouldn’t have spent my money on such a thing. I think I will always decorate in some country style. It makes me so happy!
